Reverse Osmosis Drinking Water Systems in Edmonton
A reverse osmosis (RO) system is the most thorough drinking-water filtration you can install under your kitchen sink. Homestead Water Systems pairs a four-stage under-counter RO unit with every whole-home water softener we install across Edmonton and Northern Alberta — one turnkey installation, including the dedicated lead-free chrome faucet, all plumbing connections and calibration. Published flat pricing: $3,795 turnkey and fully installed, with iron removal included for homes on a well or cistern.
How reverse osmosis works
Reverse osmosis forces water through a semipermeable membrane with pores as small as 0.0001 microns. Where a softener swaps dissolved calcium and magnesium for sodium, RO physically separates water from most of what is dissolved in it — including lead, chlorine, nitrates, dissolved solids and microplastics. Reduction rates vary by contaminant, by feed water and by membrane age, so we publish the manufacturer's certified performance data for the exact unit we install rather than a single headline percentage. What reaches your glass is clean, neutral-tasting water.
The four stages, explained
The Homestead RO unit filters in sequence. First, a sediment pre-filter shields the membrane from sand and grit. Second, a carbon block removes chlorine and organic chemicals that would otherwise degrade the membrane. Third, the RO membrane itself strips dissolved solids, lead, and microplastics. Finally, a polishing carbon stage freshens taste before the water reaches your dedicated drinking faucet — mounted on the sink deck with an integrated air gap for safe drainage.
Why softeners and RO belong together
Edmonton-area water runs hard, and well water across the surrounding counties runs harder again. A softener alone protects your appliances, hot water tank, and skin by treating every fixture in the home, but it doesn't purify your drinking water. RO alone produces great drinking water while doing nothing about scale in the rest of the house — and hard water makes RO membranes work harder and wear out faster. Installed together, the softener extends membrane life and the RO polishes your drinking water: each system covers what the other can't. That's why we install them as one turnkey package.
Maintenance is simple: annual check-ups and periodic filter changes, which we handle as part of our service visits, along with salt delivery options for your softener. Read the full system anatomy and Edmonton hardness data on our water treatment guide.
